Spinal Hygiene, The Spine and It’s Conditions, Manhattan NYC:

The human spine truly is our ‘backbone’ and more often then not we take it for granted and overlook something I like to call spinal hygiene.

Dentists get it.  They’ve managed to educate people about the value of oral hygiene and how taking care of their teeth provides significant health benefits and more importantly allows you to keep your teeth well into old age!

The same holds true for your spine.  Spinal hygiene is essential to maintaining a well functioning spine, nervious system and musculoskeletal system.  The spine will degenerate with time, as would your teeth IF you didn’t take care of them.

Why is it that spinal degeneration is acceptable as part of the ‘normal  aging process’?  I don’t think it is.  Maybe it’s because we can actually see our teeth?  Maybe it’s because if our teeth rot and degenerate somehow it’s impact is more REAL or more DIRECT because we have to look at them in the mirror day in and day out?

The reality is that if you were able to see your spine daily perhaps you would take spinal hygiene more seriously? Perhaps you wouldn’t?

The spinal column truly is the cornerstone of your body’s temple.  It is the main weight bearing ‘wall’ through which all other structures emerge from and depend upon for normal movement and stability.  Anyone who has thrown their back out or had a localized muscle spasm in their back can tell you how debilitating it can be for the entire body.

Even if your other body parts are unaffected the simplest of movements becomes unbearable because you must rely on your spinal for stability in order to move one of your outer limbs.  This is called proximal stability.  Without it your extremities don’t function normally.  The stronger and more efficient the back bone the more proximal stability it can provide for the limbs or any other structures for that matter.

In this case structure really does dictate function.  The following picture of the spine shows some of the many conditions that can affect the spine:

Many of the above noted conditions are degenerative in nature.  The fact is that there always exists some degree of genetic predisposition but our environment may play equally important a role.  Just as it does with our oral hygiene.  You may be prone to cavities and decay but you can avoid and prevent it with proper care.

The same holds true with your physical body and your spine.  It’s time people began taking a more integral role in their health and their health care.  With the changing health care environment it will become increasing important for you as an individual to take an active role in your health and wellness.

Spinal hygiene can be accomplished through various means.  The doctor of chiropractic is perhaps the best suited practitioner to advise on this and can also offer great advice on health, nutrition and fitness.  You’ve got to start somewhere.

Movement is life and life is movement.  If you become stagnant so will your spine and your body tissues.  Even walking just 30 mintues per day can have profound longstanding benefits on your overall health and spinal hygiene.

Get active, start moving and start preserving and maintaining your spinal hygiene today.

Relief for Hip Pain NYC & Arthritis Pain NYC

Manhattan, NYC: Relief for hip pain, arthritis pain and other forms of joint pain is now within reach.

If you’re suffering with hip pain or arthritis pain in NYC you’ve probably been managing the pain conventionally with little to no success.  In most cases this type of pain is progressive and pain meds only help to some degree – or it becomes a life long sentence of dependancy on these meds for relief.  Not only that, but with all the potential side effects and interactions you may be looking for alternative therapies that are non-surgical and non-invasive.

With osteoarthritis, arthritis pain and hip pain it is usually a matter of repetitive stress which arises as a result of poor biomechanics, structural stress and a loss of efficient movement across the joint.  When biomechanics change muscles begin to function less efficiently.  There is a transition from what’s known as a ‘high efficiency, low energy movement’ to a ‘low efficiency, high energy movement’ which increase the amount of friction across the joint surface.

If we consider arthritis pain in the knee or hip (pain) – or any joint for that matter – the body is designed to move in such a manner that minimizes the amount of stress across that joint.  The condition of the soft tissues, hydration and alignment all play an integral role in maintaining these normal movement patterns.  When there is any deviation from this ‘normal’ we see an increase in friction forces within the joint.  Friction is an inherent characteristic of motion.  Basic physics explains this.  To understand this concept better think of an icy road during winter.  If you hit the gas the wheels will simply begin to spin in place rapidly accelerating but not creating much motion.  This is because of lack of frictional forces to propel the car forward.

The same concept applies to our bodies.  There is always some amount of friciton created with normal movement but not so much so that it surpasses the body’s threshold.  Arthritis pain and hip pain, as well as other forms of joint pain, (again barring any systemic conditions such as RA) will generally result from increased friction across the joint surface and this arises due to a break down in biomechanics.  When friction increases this leads to more heat production.  The process ensues and heat will eventually lead to inflammation and inflammation = pain!

So, while taking anti-inflammatory medications will limit that last step and reduce pain, sometimes, it is a very inefficient approach to correcting the problem.  With this type of approach one can only hope to manage the pain creating a dependancy on the anti-inflammatory.  It’s always better to depend on your own bodies resources rather then an exogenous source of relief – a crutch if you will.

Locating the biomechanical source of increased friction, while also addressing the inflammation directly – through non-invasive means such as cold laser therapy and ATM2 – has lead to better outcomes in clinical practice for us.  The drugs will always be there as a last resort but if you exhaust those options prematurely you may be self limiting your options and further allowing the process to progress.

Hip pain, arthritis pain and other forms of body pain can be treated successfuly by correcting the breakdown in biomechanics, rehabilitating and reconditiong the neuromuscular system and when indicated addressing the inflammation directly and non-invasively with innovative technologies such as ATM2 and cold laser therapy.
