Core muscles stability is perhaps one of the most overlooked components of rehabilitation in treating back, neck and other forms of pain and joint dysfunction.  There is a hierarchy of function that exists in the human body.  Under normal, or ideal, conditions the muscles that stabilize a joint will fire first, prior to any muscle who’s function it is to move those joints.

This basic concept requires that you have stability prior to mobility across any joint in the body.  If there is no stability within a joint and the larger muscle groups attempt create motion across that joint you will have increased friction which leads to more heat production.  Heat causes inflammation – which leads to pain and degenerative change in the tissue.  Just about everything within the body is an -itis.

If we want to optimize or improve function, not just eliminate pain, we need to ensure we have adequate stability before any mobility occurs.  This can be effectively accomplished utilizing a novel new clinical rehab machine called ATM2 or ‘Active Therapeutic Movements’ in the clinical setting.

ATM2 for Core Rehabiliation

There are a couple of characteristics which make this machine unique and result in the outstanding results that we see.  First, the restraint system provides adequet external stabilization which ensures stability. Additionally, the movements are performed in an upright, weight bearing position – this aspect can’t be overlooked – complete functional rehabiliation can only be achieved when the activity can be safely and efficiently performed in the position which we normally funciton in – upright and standing.

Nobody lives there life laying down and conditioning your core in this position such as with conventional methods is not nearly as effective.  Often times in our clinic we see patients who can’t understand why they’ve injured their back inspite of all the yoga, pilates or ‘crunches’ they’ve been doing.  Feedback to the brain is intensified in an upright position and muscle recruitment patterns will activate differently in different postures.
