If you are thinking about buying an exercise machine, you have probably considered a treadmill. Treadmills are great for getting a good, solid aerobic workout. But you might also want to think about a fitness elliptical machine. These are also excellent providers of aerobic workouts and may also offer extra benefits.
Firstly, elliptical machines is easier on the knees, hips and back than is a treadmill. The problem with treadmills is that the continuous hard landings are strenuous on those areas of the body. When using an elliptical machine, you never lift a foot. Your feet remain in the pedals the entire time.
You can also get a workout of your arms as well as your legs. Many elliptical machines include handles or poles that are similar to ski poles. With these, you can work on arm muscles without having to do extra weightlifting. Depending on where on the poles you hold on, you can also target specific muscle groups. For instance a grasp higher on the poles will target calves and a lower grasp will target thighs. Arm positioning can also provide stretching to muscles like laterals and obliques.
Another good feature that allows you to work different muscles is that you can operate the machine backward as well as forward. Forward motion recreates walking or running and reverse is like running or walking backwards. Walking backward is known for its benefits on the gluteus muscles (those in your butt!) Changing directions can also add variety to the workout to keep it from getting boring. You may also like to switch direction after 15 minutes and use it as a gauge for how long you have been exercising and how much longer you have to go.
As with any other exercise, be sure to keep good posture while using an elliptical unit. Let your lower body support your weight while keeping your shoulders back and your back straight. To get even more out of your elliptical workout, tighten your abs while moving.
For best results, you will want to work at least 30 minutes. 45-60 minutes is even better. Doing this 3-4 times a week will help provide the health and fitness results you are after.
