Most people will equip their home gym with a stationary bike or a treadmill. Exercise bikes and treadmills each have their advantages and disadvantages, hence their almost – emphasis on almost – comparable popularity. In comparing the two, is one more advantageous than the other?

Keeping on Track with your Exercise Program

One of the predominant dilemmas of completing your workouts at home is keeping on top of the exercise routine. After all, there are no personal trainers to offer support, direction and assistance as well as different gym rats to talk with. So, it’s easy to see how you could quickly get bored and lose interest.

So, which machine is actually more fun to use? On a treadmill, you have the option to just walk and run, two activities that you accomplish in the normal course of activities and that perhaps will not be as fun. Of course, you have the option to change the speed and the slant on a treadmill but still, it might not be as exciting as you would like it to be.

An exercise bike allows you to do other activities while you’re working out. You are comfortably seated, making it easy for reading a great book, watching a movie or t.v. show, listening to a great album and even watching the everything around you, thanks in large part because you are not hopping on your feet. Now, look at that versus walking on a treadmill. Because an exercise bike offers you the chance to do other activities to keep you interested, there’s less of a chance that you’ll get bored and give up on your routine.

Shout Goodbye to Calories

Admittedly, analysis has recognized that the treadmill burns more calories than the stationary bike with all other things being equal. Typically using the treadmill sheds 750 calories an hour while the stationary bike only sheds 550 calories.

Should you choose a treadmill then, because you burn more calories per hour? Well, not necessarily as the numbers are only one part of the total equation.

Since you’re more likely to use the stationary bike more frequently than a treadmill, then it is but logical that the bike will offer more opportunities to burn calories. Because of that, the exercise bike is triumphant yet again.

The Importance of Staying Safe

This is probably the most critical comparison merely because you exercise to achieve a fitter body, not one that is injured from exercise itself. And, in comparing safety, the exercise bike wins over the treadmill in the safety in operating area for two reasons.

First, the stationary bike is a very low-impact exercise compared to the high-impact workout of the treadmill. This is because your feet continually impact the floor of the treadmill while in the stationary bike, your feet remain on the pedals. Another safety concern is that you are more susceptible to falling off the treadmill than on a stationary bike. If you’re on a treadmill, unlike a stationary bike, you need to stay balanced the whole time.
